Sure that all of us have an impact on the world, Balanças Marques took on the mission of contributing, as possible, for the planet’ Sustainability. And, throughout this year, that’s what we have been doing, with actions that lend weight to Nature’s conservation.
Over the last few decades, the environment has been suffering the consequences of an uncontrolled human activity that jeopardises biodiversity and the future of the younger generations. But it is still within our reach the ability to cooperate to stop the process.
So, at Balanças Marques, we invested on a few initiatives that sought to help in the fight against pollution, against climate changes, against the destruction of the natural habitats to so many lives. And we take part in the efforts:
• For the quality of the air we breathe in
In March 2020, and to celebrate World Arbor Day, we planted ten trees – one for each company of Grupo José Pimenta Marques – on a small ground next to our headquarters and now it is “Espaço Marques”, where we are creating a garden for picnics and leisure moments for our employees and the whole community.
In the future, besides offering us its shadow on heat days, these trees will be sources of oxygen for all of us. Because, when adult, a single tree can absorb about 22 kg of carbon dioxide per year, producing enough oxygen for two adults.
Which means they have weight the quality of the air we breathe in.
• For the preservation of the rivers and oceans that surround us
Since the beginning of 2020 we adopted a piece of Este river, about 500 meters of a water course that goes by right through our door in Braga and that we are committed to take care for.
Locally, we are helping on the conservation of a natural habitat for over 60 species of animals and plants and, globally, we have a small role on the fight against the garbage of the oceans. Only in plastic, it is estimated that 4,8 to 12,7 million tons of residue end up in sea per year all around the world. And, according to some studies, 80% of the residues in the ocean come from the rivers.
Which means that, with our care measures in the Este river, we can have weight on preserving the rivers and oceans that surround us.
• For reducing the waste we create
For some time, here at Balanças Marques, we stopped using the small disposable plastic bottles. Our employees continue to have water at their disposal but in a single container, and they can now use their Marques’ reusable bottles.
As such, we decreased our contribution to the landfills that are in a constant need for expansion. There are studies that sugest that, if the consumption and deposition of packages maintains, by 2050, there will be 12 million metrical tons of plastic on the landfills of the whole world.
Which means that, by reducing the bottles we use, we have a positive weight on the environment, and we are doing a small step to generate less waste.
And if there is something all of this shows is how urgent it is to adopt more sustainable measures and how easy it is to bring them into our lives. All of us are called to have a role in favour of the Nature and we can all do it. So, we invite you join EcoMarques movement as well!
