WHAT IS A CALIBRATION AND WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT

Scales and other measurement equipment can be essential to your business, requiring several precautions, as is the case of calibrations. Find out what is this process exactly and why is it so important.

From the precision scales, developed to weigh lighter substances, to the weighbridges, designed to carry out the weighing of trucks, the weighing equipment should always be precise and reliable. Especially when we talk about the commercial transactions of your business.

But, independently of their quality and what they weigh, these instruments can lose precision over time, due to the natural wear caused by the daily use, small accidents, environmental factors, among other things.

To keep your scales and weighbridges in good condition and with accurate results, you should, therefore, have several precautions and carry out calibrations from time to time.

But, after all, what is a calibration exactly?

According to the International Vocabulary of Metrology, calibration is an “operation that, in specific conditions, on a first step, stablish the relation between the values of greatness with measurement uncertainties arising from patterns and their corresponding indications with measurement uncertainties associated and, on a second step, use this information to stablish a relation to obtain the measurement result of one indication.”

This is, calibration is the process through which one tests and ensures the reliability of the measurement instruments, such as a scale or a weighbridge.

Using standard weights subject to a strict control and certification, a calibration submits the weighing equipment to several tests and, in the end, defines the result that should show in the presence of an object with that mass.

Carried out by certified entities for this purpose, calibrations offer a guarantee that the scales and weighbridges are operating with the intended and expected precision.

And why is the calibration so important?

A calibration ensures that your weighing equipment can be used, presenting results with a minimum deviation from the standard, which may benefit your business at many levels:

- Results reliability
After the calibration, you can be sure that your scales and weighbridges are correctly weighing the raw material that enters your business and/or the products that you sell. This way, calibrations avoid waste and the need to correct errors, contributing, at the same time, to your customer’s satisfaction.

- Detection of equipment that need to be replaced
Your weighing equipment can decrease their performance as components are subject to wear. And this performance decrease can’t always be solved, but it can be detected on the calibration, indicating that is time to replace your scales/weighbridges.

- Compliance with your goals and audits
With calibrations, you ensure that your weighing instruments are working accordingly to your goals and standards and you have a certification that demonstrates they’re working correctly in case of audits focused on the quality of your business.

Now that you know what a calibration is and why this process is so important to your business, schedule your with Balanças Marques. Specialists on the production and development of weighing solutions, we also have a calibration lab recognized by IPAC – Portuguese Institute of Accreditation and we are, for this reason, qualified to help you with the calibration of your scales and weighbridges.
